Although Graham hated to fly, he proposed taking aerial photos of agricultural land for a group show of emerging artists at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum in 2009. This involved him finding someone willing to take him up in a small plane, so that he could hang out the window with his camera. Huge amounts of anxiety were expended in the process.
Even though friends tried to dissuade him from the project, he was determined to make some abstract images from the aerial shots. He also wanted to make a large-scale cyanotype print of a photo taken “Up in the Air”.
